Trump says Russia-Ukraine peace deal is closer than ever since 2022

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that efforts to bring the war between Russia and Ukraine to an end have advanced further than at any previous point since fighting began in 2022.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump suggested negotiations were reaching a critical stage, saying, “I think we're closer now than we have been ever and we'll see what we can do.

We want to save a lot of lives.” He pointed to what he described as wide-ranging and constructive discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well as multiple European leaders.

According to the president, he has recently held conversations with the leaders of Germany, Italy, Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Norway, Denmark, and the Netherlands, along with representatives from NATO. He characterized those exchanges as “very long and very good.”

Trump also said he has spoken several times with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing his view that there is interest on both sides in ending the conflict, while acknowledging the challenge of keeping Moscow and Kyiv moving in the same direction. “We've had good talks with Russia, and I think they'd like to get back to a more normal way of life,” he said.

As stated by reports, a U.S. official who briefed journalists earlier indicated that the president was “really pleased” with recent developments during talks held in Europe. The official added that negotiators believe roughly 90 percent of disputed issues have been addressed, although several critical points remain unresolved.

Officials also said that proposed arrangements for Ukraine’s security could include protections similar to NATO’s collective defense clause, often referred to as “Article Five-like” guarantees.

Trump has reportedly indicated a willingness to send such measures to the U.S. Senate for approval.

According to reports, intensive discussions have taken place in Berlin since Sunday, involving Ukrainian, American, and European representatives. Additional meetings are expected later this week, with officials indicating that further negotiations could be held over the weekend in Miami, Florida.
