U.S. Not to Commit to Ukraine Until Peace Deal in Place

(MENAFN) Washington will only deliver enduring security commitments to Ukraine after a peace settlement is finalized, media reported Wednesday, citing European diplomatic sources and individuals briefed on recent high-level exchanges.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed European allies during a Tuesday conference call that President Donald Trump plans to negotiate comprehensive long-term assurances safeguarding Ukraine's security—but exclusively following a signed agreement, according to the sources.

Ukraine has consistently identified Western security commitments as essential preconditions for any potential accommodation with Russia, though NATO member states have yet to crystallize what concrete form such future support mechanisms would assume.

Rubio also stressed that security arrangements remain an administration priority requiring rapid completion as components of a wider diplomatic package, sources indicated. He allegedly broached the matter during Geneva negotiations last weekend but provided no supplementary specifics during a subsequent call with British and French officials.

Diplomatic sources noted additional matters anticipated for post-agreement resolution include Ukraine's territorial sovereignty and the disposition of frozen Russian financial assets.

Washington Rejects Characterization of Rubio's Remarks
The US State Department rejected Politico's framing of Rubio's comments.

"Secretary Rubio, along with the entire Trump administration, has clearly underscored that security guarantees would need to be part of any peace deal, as he has consistently outlined in both public and private," State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.

The White House likewise affirmed any future settlement must incorporate comprehensive and dependable security protections for Ukraine.

"The Trump administration has repeatedly affirmed, publicly and privately, that any deal must provide full security guarantees and deterrence for Ukraine," spokesperson Anna Kelly said.
